They have changed around some of the wait staff duties at Gumbeaux and it sucks to be me. Lulu said I have to mop the bathrooms before the shift starts, to make sure they smell extra fresh. Like they were ever extra fresh to begin with. Last week Sue Bell was in the ladies’ room eating an oyster po-boy with the door locked. Customers were knocking on the door and asking her if everything was okay. I don’t know why we can’t just put extra air fresheners in the bathrooms. I have never had to mop a floor in my life. It’s total bullshit. She can just get in there and mop her own damn floor. She also wants me to scrub the sink with bleach. The fumes make me gag and Clarence is enjoying my pain entirely too much.

Betty told me that I could do a little better with my attitude. She caught me in a bad mood and I told her to screw herself, so she went to the walk in fridge, got a spray can of whipped cream and sprayed it into my face. I got a can too, and then things got a little out of hand. We were yelling at each other, and laughing at that point. Lulu came out of her office and was livid. She said we only had thirty minutes before we opened and that we were on thin ice. She made us mop the floor and bar area, and even Willie’s oyster station. Willie came in while we were at it and was totally delighted.

“This is all your fault, by the way,” Betty let me know with a giggle. “All I said was that you could have a better attitude about things. I mean, it is your choice to work here. You could go get a job in an office if you think you’re too good to do side work and a little cleaning once in a while.”

“I don’t think I’m too good for it,” I snapped, wondering if I would ever get the smell of oysters out of my hair.

Both Willie and Betty started laughing, and it was clear they had already had a conversation about my disposition. Maybe they are right, but either way, I had a hard time putting on a happy face for the lunch crowd.
